Masuku One Filter Pack x50. Replacement filters for Masuku One. We offer replacement filters for your Masuku One in packs of 10 and 50, and we also offer Masuku One Filters on a monthly or quarterly subscription basis.

Powerful filtration performance
The filter inside the Masuku One face mask has a filtration efficiency of over 94%, which is equivalent to FFP2 standards. Third-party testing also shows pressure drop to be at least 35% lower than certification standards, making sure Masuku products are highly breathable.

Ground-breaking manufacturing technologies
Masuku’s proprietary filtration technology is centred on a unique method of high-voltage electrospinning. Compared with meltblown fibres, which are used to make the majority of face masks currently available, the electrospinning process is able to create a structured membrane consisting of extremely fine nano-fibres (up to 1,000 times narrower than a human hair) dispersed with extreme precision for maximum efficiency.

Advanced protection
The greater surface area of nano-fibres, coupled with the uniform distribution achieved through the electrospinning technique, results in far superior filtration material that protects against viruses and captures pollutants, dust, pollen and bacteria. The result is clean air, without breathing restrictions or unpleasant humidity.

Better for the planet
Not only are Masuku face masks made using recycled materials that can be re-recycled when it’s time to dispose of them, the replaceable filters are bio-based, made from a biodegradable polymer.

Your comfort is our priority. So, to make sure your Masuku One fits nice and snug, we’ve developed this handy little size guide.

To find the perfect size for you, just measure the distance from the lower edge of your eyes to the bottom of your chin and compare it to the chart below.

Masuku was born from a vision for clean air. During her travels in Japan, entrepreneur and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova witnessed the need for a truly sustainable face mask that is more technologically advanced, comfortable and responsibly made than anything out there.

Natalia set on a mission to launch the most eco-friendly, breathable and stylish face mask on the planet, to protect people from unseen dangers like air pollution and viruses. Natalia focused on creating a face mask that would become an effortless essential in our lives, just like sunscreen and filtered water.

When searching the market there was nothing that came close to her vision of a truly well-designed and absolutely environmental face mask. This led her to partner with design firm and material experts Pentatonic, to launch the world’s most sustainable, breathable and stylish face mask - Masuku.

Named after the Japanese word for ‘mask’, Masuku nods to the importance of the face mask in Asian cultures, where it is commonly worn as a sign of respect for the community’s health.

Natalia and Pentatonic reinvented the very idea of a face mask from the ground up, and after two years of innovative design and development, Masuku was born. Every material is either bio-based or recyclable at the end of its life, and every manufacturing aspect was calibrated to achieve maximum comfort and carefully considered with sustainability in mind.

Natalia expressed ‘when I started the project, I knew that developing a highly sophisticated air filtration system was pointless if not fully sustainable at the core…today our masks offer a truly safe and comfortable breathing experience, with no impact on the planet.’

She has been fuelled by a unique vision to provide every man, woman and child with clean, safe and pure air, stating ‘the air we breathe affects every organ and cell in our bodies.

I sincerely hope, in the future, face masks will not be needed. Until then, we want Masuku to be the most technological, sustainable option to breathe clean air, while respecting it.’

Masuku One

What sizes is Masuku One offered in?

The Masuku One is currently available in two different sizes, small and medium. Please refer to our Masuku One Size Guide.

Does size S fit children?

Yes, the small fits children above 10 years old

How do I know what size I am and how do I measure my face?

Please refer to the sizing chart on the product page.

How is the filter made?

Masuku’s patented nano-fibre filtration material is created from a newly developed electrospinning process involving an engineered compostable polymer. Compared with melt-blown fibres or simple fabrics, which are used to make the vast majority of face masks currently available, the electrospinning process is able to create a highly uniform membrane consisting of extremely fine fibres (up to 1,000x narrower than a human hair) dispersed with extreme precision for maximum material efficiency.

What can it filter?

The filtration membrane provides strong protection from dangerous particles in the air, including pathogens, allergens and pollutants. This is all made possible through a combination of manufacturing processes and bio-based filtration technologies that Masuku has developed. We designed filters to fight the smallest particles out there, such as viruses. We are able to filter urban air pollution, pollen, bacteria, and fibres by any product. Smells have different mechanics and sizes when they travel in the air, and you will still smell any odour, it applies to any product out there. The replaceable filter inside a Masuku One mask is optimised to a similar level of FFP2 standard, meaning it has a filtration efficiency of over 94%.

Can wearing a Masuku One prevent Coronavirus from spreading?

Face masks can help slow down the spread of the virus. This is in addition to other preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated, frequent hand-washing and social distancing.

Coronavirus can spread through droplets and particles released into the air by speaking, singing, coughing or sneezing. The Masuku One is snug over the nose, mouth and chin, with no gaps. This closed cup design seals the air coming out from under the edges of the mask, ensuring maximum protection.

How often should I swap out the filters?

To ensure optimum performance of your Masuku One, change the filter regularly. Over time, the filter will become saturated and start to lose function. Each Masuku One comes with 3 filters, plus one already installed. We expect the average user to require 10 filters each month.

How many hours use can I get before changing the filter?

This varies greatly depending upon location (i.e. levels of ambient air pollution) and personal usage patterns.

For example, two people in central London would need to replace the filter at different intervals depending upon whether they commute by tube, bicycle or car; whether they work on a construction site or in a well-ventilated office.

As a rule of thumb, we expect the average person using the mask on a daily basis would need to change their filter every three days.

What tests have been carried out?

How should the filters be responsibly disposed of after use?

The key technology of the Masuku mask is its biodegradable filter layer. We have worked hard to develop a materials solution to overcome the issue holding back conventional melt blown polyester filters. Our solution is to use a bio-based polymer mesh using PHB. This filter layer is deposited onto a viscose substrate. This means that both the filter and the mask material can be disposed of as compostable waste. We are undertaking a number of certification test programmes relating to biodegradability/compostability and once in place will allow us to recommend that the filters are home composted as the most responsible means of disposal.

Has this been tested in contact with skin? Is it dermatologically safe?

Yes, all textile components have been tested for hazardous dyes and auxiliaries. The guard material, which is the main point of contact with the skin, is OEKO-TEX® certified.

How should it be washed and cared for?

Under everyday circumstances in typical urban environments, we recommend using gentle hand wash.

1. Use mild gel detergent or hand soap and warm water to create a lather.

2. Gently rub the cover and earloops for a minute, then rinse under running water until all suds are removed.

3. Allow to dry at room temperature laid flat.

Never bleach, tumble dry, dry clean or iron.

The frame can be handled the same way, or using an alcohol based wipe.

It should be washed at least twice a week if you are using the mask for longer periods of time.

The latest government or medical advice should always take precedence.

Can I fold the mask to put it in my pocket or bag?

The Masuku One is not recommended to be folded and stored in your pocket. This can cause too much strain on the plastic frame, and ultimately cause damage to the product.

Where is best to dispose of a Masuku One?

Firstly, separate the components. The frame is made from 100% HDPE and is marked with the HDPE recycling logo. It can be placed in a recycling bin, along with the outer fabric which is 100% PET, as marked by the label. The filters are made from a biodegradable polymer and are designed to be compostable (certification pending).

How do you store the mask when you aren’t using it?

It’s important to store your mask in a cool, dry place between usage. Ensure the mask is protected from any potentially contaminated surfaces.

How long should I expect my reusable mask to last for?

If well cared for this product should last anywhere up to several years. As we designed the components to be modular, you can refresh individual parts as needed.

What materials are used?

COVER: Outer 100% recycled polyester, guard 100% polyester

FRAME: HDPE TRIMS (A-ring/adjuster): POM

EARLOOPS: 79% recycled polyester, 21% recycled elastane

FILTER: Viscose substrate/PHB membrane.

Where do the materials come from?

All parts are currently manufactured in China, where the majority of products are made. The outer cover fabric is from UK for launch batches, but we have resourced alternatives locally to Chinese factories. Filter material is currently manufactured in Germany/Czech Republic but will be manufactured in the UK. We are looking for ways to reduce carbon footprint and source more locally in Europe.

Where is the Masuku One made?

The Masuku One is manufactured in the UK.

Why are you using plastics?

Plastic is a high performance material, is easy to disinfect and is cost effective. It has a smaller environmental impact in comparison to most textile fibre types.

Masuku Daily Surgical

Has this been tested in contact with the skin? Is it dermatologically safe?

All the materials that are exposed to skin have standard 100 OEKOTEX certificate which means you can be certain that they are tested for harmful substances and are harmless for human health. General guidance must be followed. If you have an allergy, use at your own risk.

What is the recommended usage duration per mask?

A single day is suggested per each mask, considering non-highly hazardous environmental conditions. Otherwise we would say 3 hours. If the products get wet, we do not recommend drying and reusing it.

How do you store the mask when you aren't using it?

You can dispose of it at the end of the day, until then you can store it in anyway you are used to with other products. However, try to not damage it mechanically or overstretch it to the point of breaking it.

Are the straps made from the same material?

No, the earloops tapes are made from natural rubber and biodegradable nylon.

Material: 47% natural rubber / 53% Biodegradable Nylon

Where is best to dispose of this product?

We are currently conducting testing with industrial composting authorised facilities to identify right disposal routes to provide guidance. Due to potential concerns of contamination by viruses, we would advice to dispose them with general waste at the moment. We are working on creating a process flow on how customers best dispose and what happens if they don't do this (end up in nature or general waste). Full results will be given upon rest results. As a rule of thumb, components degrade slower in water.

What happens if it is put in general waste?

If it is put in general waste, it will most likely will end up in the landfill. Here it will probably biodegrade over a period of time. The majority would get incinerated.

Do the straps need removing before disposal?

No, the straps will not need removing before disposal. If you remove the earloops, the base might degrade quicker, this is what we are currently testing. It might be a recommendation for future, but not a requirement as yet.

Do straps degrade the same way/same rate as the mask?

The natural rubber and the biodegradable nylon yarn that covers it are designed to biodegrade within 3-5 years. The main body of the mask has been tested in soil under aerobic biodegradation conditions and has shown 100% degradation after 46 days leaving no harmful or toxic residue in the soil. We are currently working on identifying the best practise and route of getting these masks as a whole to biodegrade most effectively.

Biodegradable under natural conditions -what does this mean?

This means that it does not require industrial composting, and will biodegrade in natural environments, e.g. home composting - We want the products to degrade in soil and marine/water environment, as some biodegradable materials are usually limited to only some of known environments.

Do you need to bury them?

You wouldn't need to bury them but it would help speed up the degrading process.

What happens to a standard surgical mask if discarded?

Single use masks that end up in nature will harm wildlife and pollute waters as they contain plastics (often PP, polypropylene). Compared to Masuku Daily, these type of masks can take up to 450 years to break down into microplastics depending on UV/environmental conditions.

How is the filter made?

We have selected bio-based polymer, generally used by bacteria’s as an energy storage, that is prepared by methods of dissolving in solvents, that are electrospun into homogeneous nanofibers under ultra-high voltage.

We see 'normal' petroleum based masked polluting oceans already.. what happens to this Masuku Daily products when in contact with water?

The Masuku Daily will eventually breakdown into smaller particles and biodegrade usually within a couple of weeks. This is still to be tested and verified in different environmental conditions such as in water, in direct UV and in soil. PHB degrades rapidly, whereas viscose, noseclip, rubber and bio nylon breaks down a little slower, but still within about 5 years. Bio clip will degrade into bio-mass.

Where is the material sourced from?

Majority of product composition is sourced from Germany.

What Certification do you have?

Our DIN Certificate proves that the Masuku Daily is made up of 73% Bio-based Carbon Content. The Certificate can be found here:
